Group by how the link came to exist

Editorially earned, exchanged, bought, self-placed, and scraped are five different things that a domain-authority column shows as one. Sorting the profile by origin explains more about a site's performance than any aggregate score, and it is the only view that tells you which portion is repeatable.

Relevance is assessed at page level, not domain level

A link from a well-known publication on a page about an unrelated subject is worth less than a link from a modest trade site on a page about exactly this topic. Profiles built to a domain-metric target tend to be full of the former, which is why they often look strong and perform indifferently.

What an unnatural profile actually looks like

Rarely a single bad link. Usually a pattern: the same commercial anchor text repeated far more often than any editor would choose it, a burst of acquisitions in one month with nothing before or after, or a footprint of sites that link to each other and to little else. Less than clients expect. Removal requests are worth making where a relationship exists, and disavowal is a narrow tool for genuinely manipulative patterns rather than a routine hygiene step. In most cases the faster route is dilution: enough genuinely earned references that the historic pattern stops being the dominant signal.
